Coast To Coast Heartland?

I'm attempting to play Coast To Coast using the Southern route, but I don't know how to get thru the "heartland". Will the game ever allow me to? If not, what do i do?

For the southern route you need to earn certain amounts of industry profits before you get access to new territories. Try checking your progress towards the next target in the last page in the ledger (shortcut for ledger is "L").
